What is Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Why You Should Play It
Developed by Capcom, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a visual novel adventure video game. It was first released in 2011 in Japan for the Game Boy Advance. The story revolves around a rookie defense attorney named Phoenix Wright, who tries hard to win his cases and have his clients not declared as guilty. Other notable characters of the game include Mia Fey, who is Phoenix’s boss; Maya, who is Phoenix’s assistant and also Mia’s sister; and another prosecutor named Miles Edgeworth.
The game allows players to control their character, Phoenix, through two sets of sections – investigations and courtroom trials. During investigations, players can search for and gather evidence and relevant information regarding the case that they are working on, and during court trials, just like in real life, they can answer questions from the judge, the prosecutor as well as witnesses, while also being able to cross-examine witnesses.
Since it is a visual novel, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is very heavy in text and dialogue. However, this does not mean that the game is boring. Thanks to its brilliant and unique story-telling, its great and well-developed, multi-layered characters and more, the game is one that avid gamers shouldn’t miss. Below, we discuss the outstanding qualities of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney that make it a game that you should play:
Unique and brilliant story-telling
What makes this game stand out is that it has such a unique and brilliant way of telling its story. There are five different cases, all of which need to be played in a specific order. But after you have finished solving all the cases, then you can play them in any order you want. The story starts with Phoenix agreeing to represent his childhood friend who has been accused of murdering his girlfriend. The story develops further in a detailed manner, with each case connected to natural development. Besides, since this game is dialogue-heavy, it can be easy to be invested in the story more than expected.
Well-developed and multi-layered characters
All the characters in the video game are incredibly well-developed, and multi-layered beings. Things often take an unexpected turn of events as characters turn out to be something completely different from what they appear to be on the surface level, much like in real life. Phoenix, and you, the player, discovers the truth about these other characters from your encounter with them in each of the cases that you work on. For example, characters you thought innocent turn out to be guilty and Phoenix uncovers these truths as the game progresses.
Beautiful art and visuals
Another reason why you should play Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is because of its spending art and visuals in general. From the setting to the characters, every visual aspect of the game has been beautifully designed. This also plays a significant part in why you can remember characters so easily. Even though there may not be a huge cast, they are incredibly well-written and well-designed.
