Left Alive is an upcoming third-person shooter developed and published by Square Enix. The game takes place in a cutting-edge and futuristic world with advanced mecha suits that soldiers use in war. The game will be released for both PlayStation 4 and Windows as was announced in 2017. It will release in Japan on 29th February 2019.
The game takes place in an advanced setting where the world is in chaos and conflict due to the emergence of new kinds of bipedal mecha weapons. The game features multiple playable characters and a cover and shoots gameplay mechanic that is quite similar to the Gears of War franchise. Apart from gun-based combat, the gameplay will also have a melee combat system as revealed in the various gameplay demos. The game is set in the Front Mission universe which was a series of games previously released by Square Enix. Since the original release of the game in 1995, the story now covers several media such as multiple games, manga, novels, radio dramas mobile phone games and toys.
Gameplay and Story
In the fictional setting, there are fictitious nations at play in world politics with countries such as the United States of the New Continent, Organization of African Federations, European Community, Oceania Cooperative Union, and others. The new game, Left Alive tells the story from three different perspectives with three playable characters. It happens during the horrific invasion of the Novo Slava in 2127. From what we have seen so far from the gameplay trailers, the player controls one character at a time and is equipped with various kinds of weaponry. There are not only guns but multiple types of grenades, mines, and traps that make for tactical gunfights. Apart from this, we have also seen two other kinds that involve melee combat and controlling a mecha suit. The melee combat seemed pretty straightforward with a cue from the melee combat system of Resident Evil. The mecha combat system also was reminiscent of several JRPGs that are quite popular today. The mecha suit as seen in the game offers advanced combat abilities and mobility in terms of bigger guns and fun sliding ability that we are keen to try out. The mecha suits contain three kinds of weapon; the demo showed us missile launchers, machine guns and a rail gun which seemed like the ultimate weapon in the mecha’s arsenal.
A lot of studios have shifted their focus from first-person shooters to a third-person that offers better immersion according to a lot of gamers. Japanese shooters have always focused on third person views unless we consider the old-school rail shooters. Left Alive promises to be an exciting game that is doing new things with the third-person genre. The game has been in development for a long time and is one of the most awaited games in Japan this year. With a vast fanbase, thanks to their mangas, radio dramas, and novels, the game is set to be a massive hit upon its release.
