The Walking Dead: A Telltale Game Series Recap
The Walking Dead, also known as The Walking Dead: A Telltale Game Series or The Walking Dead: The Game, is an episodic, graphic adventure video game. It is based on the famous The Walking Dead comic book series and is developed by Telltale Games. Currently, there are five seasons of the game, along with an additional downloadable episode. The game, like its comic book version, follows the story of how groups of people try to survive after the world was hit with a zombie-like apocalypse, turning the dead into creatures known as “walkers” who hunt the living. The game focuses on the story of Lee Everett and Clementine, a young girl whom Lee finds at the start of the epidemic, in particular.
With both digitals, as well as physical releases, all seasons of the game are available for game consoles, computers as well as mobile phones. The first season of the game, titled “The Walking Dead: Season One,” was released in April 2012.
Ever since its first release, the game has been widely appreciated and has received critical acclaim, not to mention a huge commercial success. What makes The Walking Dead so unique is that it focuses on character development and story, rather than focusing simply on puzzle solving and ascending to higher levels.
Depending on the choices a player makes, the game progresses, and the story is affected. For instance, what you choose to say to another character in the game or your actions will determine the story development. As a result of your words and actions, a character may change their feelings about you, or someone may get killed. In other words, the developer’s choice to emphasize this aspect of the game makes it very much like real life. The choices each player makes is then carried over from episode to episode. Telltale, the developer, tracks these episodes and uses them to direct their writing of later episodes.
The Walking Dead, as mentioned before, has been praised by critics, who are in favor of the game’s decision to focus on emotions and story development. It has won several awards, including many Game of the Year awards. Now that the latest and final season of the game is out, let us take a look at all the previous seasons of the game in detail including story development and characters.
The Walking Dead: Season One
The first episode of the first season of the game, The Walking Dead: Season One was released in April 2012. The following four episodes of this season were released at a two-month interval. The first episode titled “A New Day” introduces the characters Lee Everett and Clementine, a young girl who was found alone by Lee at the onset of the walker epidemic.
Clementine’s parents had traveled to Savannah before the apocalypse, the reason why Lee found her alone and rescues her. The two join a survivor group in Macon, Georgia so that they may have some protection from the walkers. However, the group is soon attacked by walkers and scavengers, and are forced to flee. They head to Savannah, where they hope they will find boats they can use to get away from the mainland. Lee, while teaching Clementine important survival skills, promises to reunite her with her parents. But when the group reaches Savannah, they do not find any boats, and a strange man starts communicating with Clementine through a walkie-talkie. Then, Savannah goes missing, and Lee, while manically looking for her, gets bitten by a walker. He goes on in search of Clementine, whom he finds being kidnapped by a man who blames Lee for his family’s death. Lee and Clementine escape and on their way, find that Clementine’s parents have already become walkers. Lee, because of his walker bite, becomes increasingly weak. Clementine drags him to a safe location, where Lee tells her to either leave him or kill him before he becomes a walker. He also instructs Clementine to find the rest of the survivor group.
A special, downloadable episode, 400 Days, was released in 2013 so as to bridge the gap between Season 1 of the game and Season 2, which was to be released in December 2013. This special content follows the stories of five different protagonists. In the end, each survivor is offered the option of being taken to a safe camp.
The Walking Dead: Season Two
Season 2 of The Walking Dead has five episodes, with the first episode released on December 17, 2013. In the second season of the game, which is set roughly a year after the first game, Clementine is alone, separated from the survivor group and has no option but to fend for herself. As players learned in 400 days, a man called Carver runs a survivor camp at a strip mall. His group plans to flee from him, and Clementine joins them. Carver plans to capture a pregnant woman named Rebecca because he believes she is carrying his child, even though she insists it is her husband’s, Alvin. Clementine and the group run into another group, where she finds that a man named Kenny, whom she traveled with during the first season, is still alive. When they learn that a huge army of walkers is going to attack the strip mall, the group, along with other prisoners, manage to escape. Carver kills Alvin, but soon after, is killed by the group during their escape.
A woman that Kenny is romantically interested in is bitten by a walker while they were escaping, forcing Clementine to kill her before she could turn. This angers Kenny. Clementine becomes increasingly close to Jane, who was a prisoner at Carver’s camp. She teaches Clementine survival skills. Later on, Rebecca gives birth to a son, whom they named Alvin Jr, but she dies soon after. As winter approaches, tension arises between Kenny and Jane, and Kenny becomes increasingly distrustful of the group. This leads to the group members fleeing from Jane, Clementine, Kenny, and Alvin Jr. Jane fakes the death of Alvin Jr in an attempt to let Clementine see what Kenny has become from losing so many people he loved. Clementine is forced to intervene and kills one of them, looking after Alvin Jr. herself.
The Walking Dead: Michonne
The Walking Dead: Michonne is a special three-episode season which was released in early 2016. Here, we get to explore the backstory of one of the main characters in The Walking Dead universe, Michonne. We learn about how she was taken away from Rick, Ezekiel and the rest of the group, and how she returned to them. Even though Telltale initially announced that the mini-series would be available as downloadable content for Season Two of the game, it was later announced that they would release it as a standalone title.
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier
The third season of the game has five episodes, and its first episode was released in December 2016, while the last episode was released in May 2017. Titled The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, the season is set a few years after season two. It follows the story of Clementine, who is now much older, and Alvin Jr., a newborn she rescued at the end of season two. He is now a toddler. Apart from Clementine, a new playable character, Javier, is introduced.
First, the game starts in Baltimore, Maryland, where the new character, Javier, resides. Javier’s family finds that Salvador Garcia has turned into a walker and bit his wife, after which they take Mrs. Garcia to a hospital. Later, Javier, Gabe, Mariana, and Kate wait in their family home for Javier’s brother, David, but decide to leave as he was taking too long to arrive. Several years later, the group is traveling in their van through Virginia. They stop at a junkyard to stock supplies, but an attack by a group called the New Frontier ends up in Mariana being dead. Clementine meets Javier and his group and joins them.
Javier, Clementine and the group go to Prescott. Here, they are attacked again by the New Frontier. The survivors, after the attack, decide to flee to Richmond, but soon find that it is the home base for the New Frontier. Towards the end, Clementine decides to leave Richmond to look for Alvin Jr.

In the fourth and final season of the game, titled The Walking Dead: The Final Season, we have four episodes in total. The first episode was released on August 14, 2018, and titled “Done Running.” The second episode, titled “Suffer the Children,” was released on September 25, 2018.
