Disco Elysium is a new role-playing game created and published by ZA/UM. The game draws inspiration from classic Infinity Engine CRPGs and tabletop role-playing games.
Featuring a vast open-world and dialogue-loaded gameplay mechanics, Disco Elysium puts you in the role of a detective investigating a murder case who also suffers from alcohol-induced amnesia.
Here are a few aspects of the game you should know before you lay your hands on it:
The gameplay of Disco Elysium features no combat. Instead, you go through dialogue trees and skill evaluations. You have four primary abilities, namely Intellect, Psyche, Physique, and Motorics. There are also six distinct secondary skills for a total of 24. You can enhance these skills through skill points earned from leveling up.
Also, you can improve an ability temporarily by arming a piece of clothing. Upgrading these helps you pass through various skill checks. However, it could also result in adverse effects and character quirks.
Disco Elysium also has a secondary inventory system called the Thought Cabinet. You can unlock a total of 53 Thoughts by conversing with other characters, as well as through internal dialogues within your own mind.
You are then better able to “internalize” a Thought through a certain amount of in-game hours. Once you complete these hours, you receive permanent benefits but also occasionally some negative effects.
Setting and story
Disco Elysium is set in the fictional city of Revachol, specifically in the Martinaise district. This is a place marked by poverty, crime, and corruption. The player-controlled detective is bestowed with the task of investigating the killing of a man found hanging from a tree in an empty lot in Martinaise.
Disco Elysium lets you handle the main plot at your own pace. You can take as many detours as you wish for side quests and check out clues that may not be in direct connection to the task you have at hand. Most of the game is discovered by going the off-the-beaten-path in an open world instead of just transitioning from one subplot to the next.
Disco Elysium provides you with ample room to explore tales of people occupying the city of Revachol. These are stories that feel true, resonate emotionally, and allow you to seek hope just beneath the surface of a world fraught with crime. You can also choose to be an antisocial genius with a voice in his head, dictating to lie compulsively without any apparent reason other than the chaos that it can bring about.
You may feel that the time limit in Disco Elysium is unusual and scary. The game progresses only when you interact with people or investigate objects. However, time in the game flies past faster than you might think. So rather than just focusing on your task, you can also take some time out to explore every small or big milestone crossing your path.
