Metro Exodus is the third installment in the series of the Metro video games. These games are based on the novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky. The game is set directly after the events of the previous two games Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. The games have received particular attention due to their excellent execution of the survival-horror genre which seems to be the genre of choice for a lot of studios today. The game is developed by 4A Games studio and published by the German-Austrian media company known as Deep Silver.
The players find themselves in post-apocalyptic Moscow and fight their way through a horde of mutated zombies and rogue humans. The setting of the game is in the year 2036 where the world was devastated by a nuclear holocaust 23 years ago. The radiation has ravaged the earth and has turned a lot of the biological residents into mutated freaks out for human blood. Apart from your elements of the first-person shooter, the game also features a crafting mechanism that allows players to craft and modify their weapons and gear. The weaponry and equipment require various tools and components that need to be scavenged throughout the post-apocalyptic wasteland. The game seems to be a mixture of open-world sandbox and linear level design with a night and day cycle along with a dynamic weather system. There is also a driving mechanism in the game that allows players to drive from one place to another in the open world missions of the game. The various details of the environment change as the weather changes with the progression of the story. The game is set in the timeline of one year.
The story so far
The game is a continuation of Metro: Last Light and follows the “redemption” ending of the game. Just like the previous games, our hero is the 23-year old Artyom who is successful in escaping the Moscow metro and is on a mission with a group of Spartan Rangers heading east into the continent. The protagonist is shown traveling along with Volga river initially which is not from the Ural mountains. The main aim is to reach the locomotive known as “Aurora” which heads east into a “new life.” The game begins one year before reaching this station right in the middle of nuclear winter in the Moscow metro. Another major character that has returned from the previous games is Anna who is now Atryom’s wife.
The gameplay and design that has been revealed so far seem stellar to say the least. Every aspect of the world of the character appears to be hand-crafted with particular attention to detail. Be it the realistic way of showing the map and character menu or the way certain guns jam up; Metro Exodus seems to have left no leaf unturned to provide complete immersion and transport the player into radioactive wastelands of post-apocalyptic Russia. The game is scheduled to be release on 15th February 2019.
