Crash Team Racing
If you’ve enjoyed Crash Bandicoot, you’ll love Crash Team Racing. Developed by Naughty Dog, this latest publication in kart racing games is the fourth installment of the Crash Bandicoot series. However, the story is focused on a team of oddball characters from the original Crash Bandicoot game. The goal is to race against the megalomaniacal Nitros Oxide, win, and save the planet from ultimate destruction.
There are about 15 characters in this game and players can choose anyone. However, only 8 are made available in the initial stages. The rest need to be unlocked through wins as the game progresses.
So far, critics have praised the game for its graphics and gameplay. There have also been a few sequels such as Crash Nitro Kart and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. The latter actually came out only last year and has gone on to earn some great ratings.
You, the player, will be operating things from within the Crash Bandicoot universe. Controls are typical – you can accelerate, steer, brake, hop, and even use weapons. You can also power-up using the analog sticks and buttons. You will notice that there are two distinct sets of crates placed randomly throughout the tracks and arenas. One type is marked with “?”, while the other type is called a “fruit crate”. Now the “?” crates offer weapons and power-ups. To access those features, you just need to drive the kart through them. The fruit crates offer wumpa fruits, which boost the speed of the kart and also the power in your weapons.
A key move in the game is the power slide, which is executed by holding down one of the shoulder buttons on the controller. This causes the kart to hop and just before it lands you steer the kart, which causes it to slide. Once a slide takes place, you will notice the Turbo Boost Meter going from green to red.
You will also notice that the exhaust from the kart turns black at this point. That’s when you hit the opposite shoulder button for a speed boost. You can carry out 3 speed boosts in a row during the power slide. The third one is the strongest.
However, all this has to be done sequentially and in time. Any delay will prevent a power slide from taking place and extended power sliding will lead to a spin-out.
There are totally 5 racing modes – Adventure, Time Trial, Arcade, Versus, and Battle. However, in general, they have several levels and each success level is reached after winning the previous one. Once a certain number of trophies are collected in a level, you get to race against the boss. If you beat the boss, you get a boss key, which grants access to Nitrox Oxide himself. After you beat the levels, you get to unlock other modes too.
On the whole, Crash Team Racing is a fantastic, exciting game. If you’re a Crash Bandicoot fan, you’ll love this one too. For more information, check out the trailer and our website here.
