The Grand Theft Auto series has never looked back since its release

Released in 1997, the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series has evolved into one of the most beloved action-adventure games, with its every new release rising to the top of charts of best-selling games. Every installation of the series has wowed gamers with its gripping plot, realistic graphics, and violent gameplay, and continues to do so.

The Grand Theft Auto series, however, has never been away from the shackles of controversy. It has always been criticized for its glorification of crime and violence and demeaning the female gender. But, surprisingly, none of this affected the perception of gamers much, and the series ran down the gauntlet to become the best-selling, open-world game series in recent times.

Why the reputation of the series as a “bad influence” unfair?

Violence, sometimes lots of it, is undoubtedly a part of the Grand Theft Auto series. But this doesn’t mean it’s a bad influence on players—a misconception that most people have about fighting and action-packed games. Let’s delve deeper into this here.

Dr. Matthew Spokes, Senior Lecturer in Sociology for York St John University, and Dr. Jack Denham, Learning and Teaching Lead at the School of Psychological & Social Sciences, recently published a research paper in the British Journal of Criminology. The paper argues against the school of thought that games like GTA can be ‘violent’ by themselves. It also contends that gamers and their decisions are a piece of the entire puzzle.

Their research reveals that players who engage in open-world games like the Grand Theft Auto series will opt for activities like getting a haircut, riding Ferris wheels, and shopping for clothes. The researchers believe that people who play such games do it in a way they would in real life. But, at the same time, such people are squeamish towards violence, often abstaining from violent acts.

The two lecturers interview a few participants who played GTA V. All participants expressed a repulsive feeling and opted for games that weren’t violent. These participants used the video game like a world simulator, hiking through the countryside, exploring mountains, or driving around the city.

The focus of the Grand Theft Auto series has been on the protagonist of each game. The way the character cuts through the dangers from underworld foes has been controversial. But the time has come for the world to realize that violence is a common denominator that defines the best-selling games of the modern times.

There are times when players do embrace the violent aspects of the game. But it cannot be ignored that most of them also repelled it. The narrative of games like GTA has always resided amidst violence, but the pro-social behavior of players overpowered the antisocial elements within the game. The research also indicates that what players soak from the real world can mold what they might do in the game.

The Grand Theft Auto series will always be counted as an epitome of action-adventure gameplay. You can buy this game from our website here and add it to your collection.
