Apex Legends versus Fortnite
Apex Legends is the latest addition to the battle royale format of games that was first popularized by PUBG. Apex Legends is developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. However, unlike typical battle royales, Apex legends has managed to provide a breath of fresh air into this already run-of-the-mill format by borrowing features from hero-shooter games.
In this game players battle in squads of three and can select unique characters or “legends” that have unique abilities. Each character has its own unique playstyle that makes for interesting confrontations and gameplay.
By now everyone is aware of the huge success that is Fortnite. Fortnite also introduced their own battle royale format which differs significantly from PUBG. In Fortnite battle royale players are split into two groups and they need to scavenge throughout the map for weapons and ammo. The typical gameplay elements of Fortnite such as destroying the environment to collect materials and instantly building structures are incorporated into the battle royale mode. Fortnite’s battle royale set a record in the number of players, a record which has been rightfully smashed by Apex Legends.
Comparing the two games
From a shooter’s point of view, Apex legends is a much better game. The physics, the game mechanics and the characters themselves are well fleshed out and provide a unique battle royale experience.
While Fortnite tried its best to stand out with its building mechanic, the intense format of battle royale made such features feel a little redundant if not excessive. Apex Legends, on the other hand, made the smarter and cleaner choice of combining hero shooter with the battle royale mode. Apex Legends is set in the same universe as Titanfall however it doesn’t feature the same elements like giant mech suit and wall running. Despite this, Apex Legends has managed to craft a high-octane shooting experience that’s gripping, to say the least.
One of the few things that Fortnite gets right over Apex Legends is their world. Epic World’s arena still feels like a better-designed world which is pleasing to hang out in. But as a pure action experience, Apex comes out as the better game. It is tight, clean and contains only what’s necessary for the core gameplay. All characters in Apex Legends have unique abilities. A passive ability that defines the character and two other abilities that can be triggered in fights. Gun design and mechanics are also superior in Apex where every gun has their weight, recoil, and force. One can run and slide around the map at incredible speeds and clear out enemies.
While the game focusses on a team-based play, their unique choice of social features makes it all the better. The best part about this game is that voice chat is not at all necessary and the unique design features allow strategies to work without teammates actually communicating. Added to this, there is a handy pinging option that allows players to inform their teammates about vital things like loot and enemies.
